Summary: Tribute to a Classic
Comment: Hard to believe nobody has reviewed this work, but it serves to confirm my view that these reviews are pearls before swine anyway. Simply put, this is THE classic handbook for world coins for a generation of collectors; first edition, 1964. This resurrection 1984 edition by the Friedbergs is not on the best paper nor bound for heavy use and the 3-grade pricing is an unnecessary nod toward the competition: The Standard Catalog of World Coins by Chester Krause and Clifford Mishler. The SCWC is far more comprehensive than Yeoman but to get the same coverage you will need both the 19th and 20th Century editions, price about $100. Yeoman is still worth having because it is compact, because it lists coins in historical rather than denominational order, and because of its numbering system - still in use and the most sensible ever developed for world coinages.
